- RechercheOn Monday, October 12, major French supermarket chains said a cyberattack raised temperatures in refrigeration units at hundreds of stores, forcing spoiled food to be discarded. The account is attributed to the chains; the reports do not independently establish who carried out the attack.
- RechercheDanfoss said affected refrigeration-management units were running outdated firmware. That statement does not establish whether outdated firmware was the means used to gain access in this attack.
- RechercheThe Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize also reported a network security issue, but it said there was no reason to conclude it was linked to the French supermarket attack.
- RechercheThe incident involved refrigeration-management systems, rather than consumer smart fridges. TIME reported that supermarket controllers can be connected to the internet to permit remote management; it also reported that the French government said exposing a management interface to the internet is contrary to best practices.
