Transcript Narrator Anna’s New Start. Anna has just arrived in a new city. She wants to find work, but she does not know her way around yet. At the bus station, with her suitcase beside her, she asks a stranger how to reach the Neighborhood Job Center. Anna Excuse me, is this the downtown bus station? I think I got off at the wrong stop. Sam Yes, it is. You are in the right place. Are you looking for a bus or a person? Anna A bus, I hope. I need to get to the Neighborhood Job Center. It may close soon. I arrived this morning, and I do not know this city yet. Sam It is on Maple Street. The bus is faster than walking, but the stop is across the street. Do you have a city bus card? Anna No. I have my suitcase and one address. Is a bus card necessary? Sam No, not for one ride. You can pay when you get on. The fare is two dollars, but try to have the exact amount. Anna I have two dollars and some coins. I hope the coins are the right kind. Sam We can check. Here is one dollar, and here are four quarters. That is two dollars. Let us look at the schedule together. Anna Thank you. I want to ask about work, but I do not have a resume here. I am worried they will not talk to me without one. Sam That is okay. The job center helps people make resumes. Look, the next bus leaves in twelve minutes. It says Maple Street, but the last stop is called City Library. Anna How will I know where to get off? Sam I can tell you. The driver also announces the stops. We should cross now, before the light changes. Narrator Across the street, Anna and Sam wait at the bus stop. The next bus will take them toward Maple Street and the job center. Anna I am glad you are coming with me. I was afraid I would miss the bus and lose the whole day. Sam You have not lost the day. You found the station, and now you have a plan. That is a good beginning. Anna Do people usually say “a good beginning” when someone arrives? Sam Sometimes. We also say, “One step at a time.” It means you do not need to solve everything today. Anna One step at a time. I like that. My first step is finding work. My second step may be finding a room. Sam The job center may know about rooms, too. Many places have a bulletin board for local notices. You can ask about that after you sign in. Anna I have never used a bulletin board for a room. Are the notices usually free to read? Sam Yes. People put up notices about rooms, jobs, classes, and community events. You should still ask questions before you agree to anything. Narrator A short bus ride later, Anna and Sam reach the Neighborhood Job Center. At the front desk, Ms. Lopez greets them and asks how she can help. Ms. Lopez Good afternoon. Welcome to the Neighborhood Job Center. I am Ms. Lopez. How can I help you? Anna Good afternoon. I am new in the city, and I want to look for work. I heard you can help with a resume. Ms. Lopez We can. We have a free resume workshop on Wednesday morning. We also have computers you can use today. You do not need to have a finished resume before you come. Anna That is good news. I do not own a computer yet. Can I sign up for the workshop? Ms. Lopez Of course. Please write your name and phone number here. The workshop begins at nine, and it lasts two hours. If you arrive a few minutes early, I can show you the computer room. Anna I can come at nine. What should I bring? Ms. Lopez Bring any information about your education, skills, or past jobs. Write down dates if you remember them. It is fine if your papers are not in the local format. We will work on them together. Anna I have my papers in my suitcase. I will bring them. Should I bring the whole suitcase? Ms. Lopez Only bring the papers you need. You can leave the suitcase somewhere safe, and you do not have to carry it around all day. Anna That helps. I was trying to carry my whole life with me today. Sam And now you have an appointment, not just an address. That feels different, right? Anna Yes. I came here with one address, and I am leaving with a real plan. Sam, thank you for helping me catch the bus. Sam You are welcome, Anna. I will be here Wednesday morning too. Maybe we can have coffee after the workshop. Anna I would like that. But first, I need to find a room and organize my papers. One step at a time.
