Transcript Maya Welcome to Slow English FM and Science and the Planet. I’m Maya. Nora joins us to discuss science and the environment. Thanks for listening. Maya NASA has selected three scientific investigations for its Moon Base program. What is the main consequence of this decision? Nora NASA says the investigations are designed to improve knowledge of the Moon and support plans for a future lunar outpost. The three payloads will study environmental hazards, possible underground lava tubes, and ice in extremely cold areas near the surface. NASA plans to deliver them through its Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, which uses commercial spacecraft. Maya So the decision covers several practical questions, rather than one single experiment. Let’s start with the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station–South Pole. What will it measure? Nora NASA says the station will monitor micrometeoroids, volatile materials, and seismic activity. Micrometeoroids are very small objects that can strike the lunar surface. The station’s data is intended to help assess risks to equipment and future crews near the lunar South Pole. Maya What is the careful point about that investigation? Does it remove those hazards? Nora No. NASA connects the investigation to the risks that equipment and crews could face near the South Pole. The station is intended to improve understanding of those conditions. It is not presented as a way to remove the hazards. Maya The second investigation is called GIMLI. What will it examine? Nora NASA says GIMLI will examine the Marius Hills Pit for signs of a large lava tube. NASA says underground spaces of this kind could offer protection from extreme temperatures, radiation, and micrometeoroid impacts. But the agency also says their suitability as shelters has not yet been established. Maya That distinction matters. What would a possible lava tube mean for the Moon Base plan? Nora It would provide information about a possible underground feature at that location. NASA presents that information as relevant to future lunar operations. The selection does not establish that the site will become part of Moon Base. It also does not establish that the feature could safely shelter people. Maya The third payload focuses on ice. What will DISCO do? Nora NASA says DISCO will make direct measurements of ice in lunar micro-cold traps. These are extremely cold areas near the lunar surface. The payload will also study how the surface reacts to rocket exhaust and vehicle movement. NASA says the results could guide future resource use and surface operations. Maya When NASA discusses resource use, what is the careful point to take from that statement? Nora The careful point is that the payload will collect direct measurements of the ice and of the surface during activity. NASA links those results to possible future resource use. The announcement does not say that the ice is already ready for extraction. It also does not say that it will definitely supply a lunar base. Maya How do these three investigations fit NASA’s larger Moon Base plan? Nora NASA describes Moon Base as a planned outpost near the lunar South Pole. The agency says it would be built gradually through robotic and human missions. NASA also says the outpost is intended to support extended human activity and help prepare for later missions to Mars. The three investigations address conditions that NASA considers relevant to that plan. Maya Does this announcement mean that the outpost is already being built? Nora The announcement means that NASA has selected three investigations and their payloads for future delivery. NASA still describes Moon Base as a planned outpost. The agency says it would be built gradually through robotic and human missions. These selections are part of that wider plan, not a completed outpost. Maya This work will use the Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. How does that initiative operate, according to NASA? Nora NASA says the initiative buys lunar delivery services from American companies for science and technology payloads. The three investigations are intended to reach the lunar surface on commercial spacecraft. NASA says the initiative has a cumulative maximum contract value of 2.6 billion dollars through 2028. That is the maximum value of the contracts described by NASA. It is not a statement that all of that money has already been spent on these three investigations. Maya NASA also announced four additional Moon Base deliveries in June 2026. What does that add to the picture? Nora NASA said Astrobotic, Firefly Aerospace, and Intuitive Machines would conduct four additional deliveries. Those missions were targeted for late 2028. This adds to the number of planned lunar deliveries connected with Moon Base. The wording describes them as targeted missions, rather than confirming that every delivery will happen on schedule. Maya What is your interpretation of the wider significance of these selections? Nora My interpretation is that NASA is directing early lunar research toward conditions that could affect future equipment, crews, possible shelter locations, and surface work. The selections do not settle the challenges of building a lunar outpost. They show that NASA is seeking more information about those challenges as part of its planned program. Maya What is the main limit listeners should keep in mind? Nora These investigations are intended to improve knowledge. A possible lava tube is not yet an established shelter. The lunar ice is not described as a ready supply. And measuring environmental hazards does not remove them. NASA presents the work as preparation for future lunar operations and, later, missions to Mars. Maya Nora, thank you. NASA’s selections focus on the conditions that future crews and equipment may face near the lunar South Pole. This has been Science and the Planet on Slow English FM. Thanks for listening.
