Transcript Maya This is Slow English FM. I’m Maya. In this program, Alex and I look at what a new Federal Reserve survey says about wealth, income, and financial pressure in American families. Thanks for listening. Maya The Federal Reserve has released results from its 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances. The figures show that typical family wealth rose between 2022 and 2025. But income and wealth did not move in the same way for every part of the population. The survey also added questions about spending, offering a wider view of family finances. Maya Alex, let’s start with the headline numbers. What does the survey mean by typical family wealth? Alex The Federal Reserve reports that real median family net worth rose by 2 percent from 2022 to 2025, reaching $215,900. “Real” means the figure is adjusted for changes in prices. “Median” is the middle point: half of families were above it and half below. Net worth is what a family owns minus what it owes. Maya So the median gives us a picture of a family near the middle, rather than letting the very richest families set the result. What happened to the average? Alex The mean, or average, real net worth rose by 7 percent to $1.24 million. That is much higher than the median. The gap between those two figures matters. It shows that an average can sit far above the wealth of a family in the middle, because very large fortunes raise the average. Maya That is an important distinction. The average rose faster, but it does not mean the typical family had wealth close to $1.24 million. What does the survey say about income? Alex Real median family income rose 7 percent to $82,200 over the same period. But real mean family income fell 6 percent, to $145,200. The Federal Reserve also reports that families at the lower ends of the income and net-worth distributions had modest increases in median and mean income. Families at the upper ends saw declines. Maya Those results complicate a simple story of one group always pulling away. But they also describe different measures and different parts of the population. Can the survey tell us whether younger families are falling behind older ones? Alex ABC News reports that families headed by someone aged 75 or older were the wealthiest age group in the survey, while the youngest families saw their wealth decline over the past three years. The summary does not give figures for the size of the gap or the decline. The broader Federal Reserve figures describe family finances across the population, but do not tell the full story for every generation. Maya Let’s look at housing, since a home can be both a place to live and a major part of a family’s wealth. What changed there? Alex The homeownership rate was 66 percent in 2025, about the same as in 2022. For homeowners, median net housing value rose from $218,900 to $230,000. That measure subtracts home-secured debt, such as a mortgage, from the home’s value. It is not the same as the home’s full sale price, and the figure applies to homeowners, not to every family. Maya And the survey also points to pressure from debt payments. What does that measure show? Alex The share of families whose debt payments were more than 40 percent of their income rose from 6.5 percent in 2022 to 8.6 percent in 2025. The Federal Reserve describes these families as having particularly high debt-payment obligations compared with their income. That is a measure of pressure, but by itself it does not tell us why the share rose or what happened to each family. Maya So a rise in wealth does not necessarily mean that every family has more room in its budget. The survey’s spending questions may help add another part of the picture. What did researchers learn from them? Alex The Federal Reserve added direct measures of annual spending and vacation spending. Researchers could then study spending alongside income and wealth in one representative dataset. In their analysis, the top 1 percent of spenders accounted for 9 percent of total spending. The reported corresponding shares for income and wealth were 19 percent and 32 percent. Maya The figures report different shares for spending, income, and wealth. Do they show that the same families rank at the top in all three measures? Alex Not always. Federal Reserve researchers found that 30 percent of the wealthiest families were also in the top 1 percent for income and spending. They say that overlap is roughly half the overlap between the top wealth and top income groups. So, in these findings, the groups overlap, but are not identical. A snapshot of wealth does not show exactly how much a family spends, or how much income it receives in a given period. Maya How should listeners read the overall picture, then? The numbers show gains in some measures, but also pressure and large differences between averages and the middle. Alex That is a careful way to put it. The Federal Reserve researchers say a single cross-section—a snapshot from one survey—cannot establish a trend on its own. Their analysis of new questions about changes over the prior year suggests that some lower-income families may have been worse off relative to higher-income families. They also say higher-income families did not appear to be pulling away. Those findings add context, but they do not erase the differences in the survey’s other measures. Maya The survey gives a broad view of what families own, owe, earn, and spend. It shows why no single number can describe financial security: the middle, the average, housing wealth, income, and debt payments each tell a different part of the story. That’s our report.
