- PBS NewsWhat we know about Tennessee's botched execution of Christa Pike
- RechercheOn September 30, 2026, Tennessee halted the execution of Christa Pike after officials administered two doses of lethal-injection drugs but could not complete the procedure. Pike was taken to a hospital, and Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review while stopping the state’s remaining executions for 2026.
- RecherchePike’s lawyers said on October 1 that she was in critical condition and receiving lifesaving treatment after the failed execution attempt.
- RecherchePike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at a Tennessee vocational school. She was 18 when the crime occurred.
- RechercheThe failed procedure has renewed attention on backup plans for executions, because prison officials had prepared alternative steps in case the first lethal-injection attempt did not work.
- RechercheThe lethal drug used in Tennessee’s attempt has been used in several U.S. states and in federal executions, but Tennessee officials have not yet explained what went wrong in Pike’s case.
- RechercheFailed lethal injections have occurred in other states. Alabama paused executions in 2022 after its third unsuccessful lethal-injection attempt and ordered a broad review of its capital-punishment system.

- BBC NewsHow fresh fighting in Tigray could spark wider conflict in Ethiopia
- RechercheThe United Nations said in January 2026 that renewed tensions and reported clashes in Tigray had worsened the security situation and created a risk of a return to wider conflict.
- RechercheThe current tensions threaten the gains of the November 2, 2022, peace agreement between Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. That agreement established a permanent cessation of hostilities.
- RechercheThe 2022 agreement sharply reduced large-scale violence, but the United Nations later said that it had not produced a comprehensive peace and that important commitments remained unfulfilled.
- RechercheThe Tigray war began on November 3, 2020, and later spread into the neighboring Afar and Amhara regions. It caused thousands of deaths, large-scale displacement and major humanitarian needs.
