- RechercheThe execution had been delayed earlier on September 30 when a federal appeals court issued a stay to examine whether Pike’s claims of childhood sexual abuse were properly considered at sentencing. The U.S. Supreme Court later overturned that stay, allowing the execution to proceed.
- RechercheOn September 30, 2026, Tennessee failed to execute Christa Pike at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Witnesses said she remained alive and was heard breathing or snoring after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital. She was taken to a hospital; her condition was not publicly confirmed.
- RecherchePike, now 50, was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student in Knoxville. Pike was 18 when the crime occurred.
- RechercheThe attempted execution was significant because Pike would have been Tennessee’s first woman executed in about 200 years. Women account for roughly one percent of executions in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
- RechercheThe failure followed another halted Tennessee execution in May 2026, when officials abandoned the lethal injection of Tony Carruthers after they could not establish the intravenous access required by the state’s protocol.

- RechercheThe immediate sporting consequence is that Portugal faces Denmark without Ronaldo expected to start. The match is listed as a UEFA Nations League Group 4 fixture in Copenhagen on October 1, 2026.
- RechercheRonaldo is 41 and remains Portugal’s captain. Earlier in 2026, coach Roberto Martinez said Ronaldo would be judged on current form rather than on his status as an iconic player.

- RechercheRonaldo’s international future is already under discussion: after Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup, he said he was not ready to make a quick decision about continuing with the national team.
