Maya In India, opposition parties planned a march to the Supreme Court in New Delhi over changes to voter lists. Maya Flooding in central Nepal has left five people missing and damaged homes, farms and bridges. The floods also threaten construction sites for three hydropower plants, which use moving water to make electricity. Alex ABC News reports that the flood hit the Budhi Gandaki River area on October 11, after a landslide blocked the river near Chumchure. Nepalese rescuers are evacuating residents and tourists and delivering supplies. No deaths had been reported by October 12. Maya Alex, how many people have been moved to safety? Alex Nepal’s disaster authority said 95 people, including nine foreign nationals, had been taken to nearby towns. Authorities also said an early warning helped most people reach higher ground before the flood. Alex The disaster comes after deadly flooding in Nepal in August, near the border with China. ABC News reported more than 1,400 deaths and thousands of people still missing. Search-and-rescue operations ended on October 5, as work shifted toward repairing damaged infrastructure. Maya The European Union has imposed new sanctions on nearly 1,600 Russian people and companies linked to the arms industry. The measures target suppliers suspected of helping make parts for drones and missiles. Alex The Associated Press reports that more than half of the new listings relate to the production chain for ballistic missiles. These are missiles that travel on a high, curved path. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said they are used by Russia. Maya What kinds of suppliers are included? Alex The EU says they include suppliers of electronics, communications equipment, radar and navigation systems, explosives, and ammunition. The EU also sanctioned 77 people accused of organizing or running elections in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine. The EU describes those elections as sham elections. Alex The Associated Press says the new measures bring the total number of Russian people and organizations targeted by EU sanctions to more than 4,500. Maya In India, opposition parties planned a march to the Supreme Court in New Delhi over changes to voter lists. They are demanding the resignation of the country’s chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. Alex Critics say the changes favor the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India’s Election Commission denies wrongdoing and says the changes were meant to remove duplicate, deceased and fraudulent entries. Al Jazeera cited media reports saying more than 133 million names had been removed from voter lists. NPR reported that 130 million people had been removed or faced removal. Critics say minorities, especially Muslims, were disproportionately affected. Maya Authorities prepared for the march by deploying thousands of security personnel, putting up barricades and closing several Delhi Metro stations. Police had detained thousands of protesters over the preceding weekend, as demonstrators tried to march. Opposition figures accused the authorities of suppressing dissent. Maya That’s the news.
