Maya Welcome to Slow English FM. This is Technology and AI, where we look at how technology affects the world around us. I’m Maya. Leo is our columnist for technology and digital life. Maya Leo, Amazon is backing plans for a large nuclear power plant in Indiana. What is proposed, and how far along is the project? Leo American Electric Power, or AEP, and reactor developer X-energy have agreed to study whether they can build a 960-megawatt nuclear plant in Sullivan County, Indiana. Amazon is providing funding for the development. The plan is for 12 reactors called Xe-100s. A reactor is a device that produces nuclear energy. The companies are studying whether the project can be built in practice. Maya Where would it go, and what would each company do? Leo It would be on the site of the former Breed coal plant, which has been demolished. The site is in Sullivan County, just south of Terre Haute. AEP would operate the proposed plant, while X-energy would supply the reactors. Amazon would be the first customer expected to buy its electricity if the plant is built. Maya Why does it matter that the plant would connect to the public electricity grid, rather than serve only Amazon? Leo AEP says the project would connect to its public grid. That means the plan is for electricity to enter the wider power system, while Amazon would be the first customer under its arrangement with the companies. The project is therefore being proposed as a grid-connected power plant. Maya And what does the 960-megawatt figure tell us? Leo A megawatt is a measure of power. Here, 960 megawatts is the planned capacity of the whole plant, made up of the 12 proposed reactors. It gives a sense of the project's intended scale, but it is a design figure for a plant that is still under study. Maya The schedule seems to depend on another project. What is the link? Leo X-energy's first power plant is planned for a site called Seadrift, at a Dow chemical plant in Texas. The Indiana project's timeline depends on X-energy delivering that earlier plant. TechCrunch reported that construction had not yet started at Seadrift. So the Indiana plan relies in part on X-energy moving its first project forward. Maya Does that make Seadrift a kind of test for the Indiana proposal? Leo It is an important step for the company's plans, but the two projects are separate sites. Seadrift is planned to have four Xe-100 reactors. The Indiana proposal is for 12. The reported timeline link means progress at the first site matters to the Indiana schedule. Maya So the main point is a sizable grid-connected project, but one still at the feasibility stage and dependent on X-energy's first plant. Thanks for joining us, Leo.
