Transcript Narrator You’re listening to Anna’s New Start, a fictional continuing story about Anna building a new life in a new city and finding her place there. Anna lives at 18 Pine Street and works as a breakfast assistant at the Harbor Lane Hotel. After agreeing on her tasks with Ms. Lopez, she returns to the breakfast room for her shift. Anna Ms. Lopez, could you show me again how you want the cups set out? I remember the task list, but I’m not sure about the order for this table. Ms. Lopez Of course. For each table, put one cup at every place setting. Then check the table list before you mark the task done. Anna Do you mean I should put all the cups out first, and then check each table against the list? Ms. Lopez Yes, that’s right. The list tells you how many places each table has. First count the places, then put out the same number of cups. Check the number again before you mark the task done. Anna I think I understand. But could you show me again with this table? I want to be sure before I do the others. I don’t want to mark something finished before I’ve checked it. Ms. Lopez Certainly. This table has four places. I’ll count them with you: one, two, three, four. Now put one cup at each place. There’s no need to hurry; the count will help you see whether anything is missing. Anna One here, one here, and two on this side. That makes four cups. Is that what you mean? Ms. Lopez Yes. Now check the table list. It says four places, so your count matches. You can mark this table’s cups as done. Anna I’ll try the next one by myself. It says this table has six places. First I’ll count the places, then I’ll set out six cups, and then I’ll check the list. I’ll mark it only after I’ve checked. Ms. Lopez That’s a good plan. Take your time. If the list and the table do not match, stop and ask me before you change anything. I’ll be preparing breakfast, so you can call me if you need me. Anna I count six places. Now one cup at each place. I have six cups, so I’ll check the list before I mark it. The list also says six places. They match. Ms. Lopez Good. What will you do next? Anna I can mark the cups for this table as done. I was worried I’d do it in the wrong order, but saying the steps helped me remember them. I counted first, set out the cups, and checked the list before marking. Ms. Lopez You did it correctly. The order is useful: count, set out, check, then mark. You can use the same steps for the other tables. Keep checking the list as you go. Anna Thanks. I’ll do the next table now. It says five places, so first I’ll count them, then set out five cups, and then check before I mark it. If I’m unsure, I’ll stop and ask. Ms. Lopez All right. I’ll be nearby while I prepare breakfast. Call me if anything is unclear or if a number does not match. Don’t guess if you see something different from the list. Anna This table has five places, and I’ve put out five cups. I checked the list, and it matches. Could you check this one too, please? I want to make sure I’ve followed the instruction correctly. Ms. Lopez I checked it. It’s correct. You followed the steps and used the list. You can mark it done. Anna All right. I’m going to finish the other tables the same way. I know what to do now, and I know to stop and ask if something doesn’t match. That makes the task clearer. Ms. Lopez Exactly. Asking was the right choice. You made sure the instruction was clear, and now you can do the task with confidence.
