Narrator You’re hearing Anna’s New Start, a fictional continuing story about Anna building a new life in a new city and looking for work. Anna has just arrived. Today, she is at a bus stop, trying to find a place where she can take a first step toward a job. Anna Excuse me. Does this bus go downtown? I just arrived, and I’m trying to find the public library. Sam This bus goes downtown, but the library is only a few blocks from here. You can walk there. Are you carrying a lot? Anna Just this suitcase and my backpack. I think I can manage. Is the library easy to find? Sam Yes. Go straight down this street, then turn left at the big grocery store. You’ll see the library on the next corner. Anna Thank you. I’m Anna, by the way. I’m still learning my way around, so I don’t want to get lost on my first day. Sam I’m Sam. Welcome, Anna. The streets can feel confusing at first, but that route is simple. What are you hoping to do at the library? Anna I want to look for work. I don’t know where to start, and I don’t have a printer or a local phone number yet. I’m not even sure what I’ll need first. Sam The library may have computers you can use. I’m heading that way, too. I can walk with you and help you find the front desk. Anna That would help a lot, if you have time. I’m not sure what kind of job I can find yet. I just want to begin. Sam I have time. And you don’t need to decide everything today. Let’s get you inside, and we can ask what services they offer. Narrator A few minutes later, Anna and Sam are inside the public library. Maya, a library worker, is speaking with them near the front desk. Maya Hi there. Welcome to the library. I’m Maya. What can I help you find? Sam Hi, Maya. Anna just arrived in town, and she’s looking for work. We wondered if the library has computers or job information. Maya We do. There are public computers in the back, and we have a free job-search session on Thursday. A staff member shows people how to look for openings and prepare an application. Anna That sounds useful. Do I need to sign up for the session? And can I use a computer today without a library card? Maya You can use a computer today with a visitor pass. I’ll give you one at the desk. For Thursday’s session, please write your name on this list. There are still a few spaces. Anna Great. I’d like to come. I don’t have a local address to put on forms yet. Is that a problem for signing up? Maya No, not for this session. You only need your name and a way to contact you. An email address is fine. You can leave the address line blank. Anna I have an email address. I’ll write it carefully. I’m relieved that I don’t need to have every detail settled before I can start. Sam That’s a good first step. The session could help you learn what local employers ask for. Have you worked before, Anna? Anna Yes, I have. I helped customers at a small shop. I liked talking with people, but I’m open to other kinds of work, too. Maya You can bring a short list of the things you did there. The staff member can help you describe your experience clearly. You don’t need to bring a finished résumé. Anna I can do that. I’ll make a list tonight, while I still remember the details. I’ll write down the tasks I did and the ways I helped customers. Thank you for making this feel possible. Maya You’re welcome. Here’s your visitor pass. The computers are just past the shelves, and the Thursday session begins at ten in the morning. Anna Thank you, Maya. And thank you, Sam, for walking with me. I came in looking for a place to begin, and now I have a day and a plan. Sam You’re welcome. I’m glad we found the right place. I hope the session is helpful, and I’ll see you around town, Anna. Anna I hope so, too. I’m going to write down Thursday before I forget. It feels good to have one small thing on my calendar.
