Narrator You’re hearing Anna’s New Start, a fictional continuing story about Anna building a new life in a new city and looking for work. Anna has moved into a room on Pine Street. Today, she is at home with Sam when she expects a call about the breakfast assistant job at the Harbor Lane Hotel. Anna Hello, Ms. Lopez. Thank you for calling. I’m glad I was home. Ms. Lopez Hello, Anna. I’m glad I reached you. I have good news. We’d like to offer you the breakfast assistant job. Anna Thank you. I’m very happy to hear that. I enjoyed meeting you, and I’d like to work at the hotel. Ms. Lopez Good. You made a strong impression at the interview. Before we talk about the first day, do you have any questions about the job? Anna Yes. I wrote down two questions. The first one is about the morning schedule. You said the shift begins at five thirty, is that right? Ms. Lopez That’s right. The breakfast team starts at five thirty. We prepare the dining room and food before the guests come down. Anna I checked the bus from my street. The first weekday bus that gets near the hotel arrives at five twenty-one. I think I need a little more time to walk from the stop and get ready. Ms. Lopez You’re right to check that before your first day. We ask staff to arrive about ten minutes before the shift, so that bus would be too late for a five thirty start. Anna I understand. Is there another bus earlier? I haven’t walked to the stop yet, so I still want to check the route in daylight. But I looked at the schedule with Sam. Sam The weekday schedule showed the first bus leaving Grand Avenue at four fifty-eight. It reaches the stop near the hotel at five twenty-one. We haven’t found an earlier bus yet. Ms. Lopez Thanks for checking. I can make a small change for your first week. Could you start at six o’clock instead? You would still be there early enough to help with breakfast. Anna Yes, six o’clock works much better. I can take that bus and have time to walk from the stop. Would I arrive at five fifty, then? Ms. Lopez That would be good. Please come to the staff entrance at five fifty. I’ll meet you there on your first morning and show you where to put your things. Anna Thank you. When would you like me to start? I want to make sure I understand the date correctly. Ms. Lopez Your first shift can be Wednesday. It will be a training shift, so I’ll work with you and explain the main tasks. The shift ends at ten thirty. Anna Wednesday at six, and I should arrive at five fifty. I’ll write that down. Is there anything I should bring with me? Ms. Lopez Please bring a photo ID and your bank information so we can arrange your pay. Wear dark pants and comfortable, closed shoes. We’ll provide your shirt and apron. Anna I have a photo ID and dark pants. I’ll check my shoes tonight. I may need to ask you one question about the bank information. Do you mean the details for sending my pay to my account? Ms. Lopez Yes, exactly. You can bring a paper from your bank with the account details, or write them down clearly. If you’re not sure what to bring, call me tomorrow. Anna That’s clear. I’ll check tonight, and I’ll call if I’m unsure. Thank you for giving me a chance, Ms. Lopez. I’m ready to learn. Ms. Lopez You’re welcome, Anna. I’m pleased you accepted. I’ll see you Wednesday at five fifty. If anything changes, I’ll call you. Anna I’ll be there. Thanks again. Have a good afternoon. Ms. Lopez You too, Anna. Goodbye. Sam That sounded good. Wednesday at six is clear, and the bus should get you there in time to arrive ten minutes early. Anna Yes. I’m happy about the job, and I’m glad I asked about the bus before my first day. I’ll still walk to the stop in daylight, so I know exactly where to wait. Sam That makes sense. You’ve got two days to check the route and your shoes. Do you want me to walk with you to Grand Avenue tomorrow? Anna I’d like that. I can learn which side of the street I need, and then I’ll know what to do Wednesday morning. For now, I’m going to find my bank paper.
