Narrator This is Anna’s New Start. Anna has just arrived in a new city and is looking for work. Today, she and Sam are at a neighborhood copy shop on Thursday morning. Anna has an interview at the Harbor Lane Hotel at ten, and she hopes to bring a printed copy of her resume. Anna Hi, could you help me print a resume? I have it saved on this little drive, and I only need one copy. Rosa Alvarez Sure. I’m Rosa. You can plug it into that computer. How many copies do you need, and do you want black and white? Anna Just one, please, and black and white is fine. My interview is at ten, so I don’t want to waste too much time. Sam It’s eight forty-five, so we have some time. Let’s keep things simple and make sure the file is the right one. Rosa Alvarez The computer sees the drive. What file should I open? There are a few documents here with Anna’s name. Anna It says “Anna resume final.” I think that’s the right one. I saved it after the job center workshop. Rosa Alvarez I see it. The page looks good, and the words fit neatly. I’ll send it to the printer now. Anna Thank you. I worked on it at the job center. I haven’t printed it since I made those changes, so I hope it looks the same on paper. Rosa Alvarez That’s all right. It should be ready in a moment. Oh, wait. The printer says there’s a paper jam. Sam Can it be fixed quickly? We could wait a few minutes, as long as we still have enough time to get to the hotel. Rosa Alvarez I’m afraid not. A piece of paper is stuck deep inside. I’ll need to open the back, and the printer may be out of service for an hour. Anna An hour is too late. I have to leave for the hotel soon. Is there another place nearby where I could print it? Rosa Alvarez There’s a library about ten minutes away. They have public computers and printers. You can email the file to yourself, or use your drive there. Sam We can make it if we go now. But Anna, you don’t have to bring a copy if the hotel didn’t ask you to bring one. Anna They didn’t ask for one. I just thought it would be useful to have. But I don’t want a piece of paper to make me arrive late. Rosa Alvarez That makes sense. If you decide to try the library, I can give your drive back now. You won’t need to pay for a print here. Anna I’ll try the library, then. Could I check the file there before printing? I want to be sure I bring the current version. Rosa Alvarez Of course. Here’s your drive. No charge, since the printer didn’t do its job. Good luck at the interview, Anna. Sam Thanks, Rosa. Let’s walk quickly, but we don’t need to run. We can take the bus if we’re short on time. Narrator A little later, Anna and Sam are at the nearby library. They have her resume file with them, and there is still time before the hotel interview. Anna The library is open, and the computer has my file. I’m glad we made it. The walk was quicker than I expected. Sam It’s nine twenty. We still have time. Do you want to print it now, or would you rather go straight to the hotel? Anna I want to try once. If the printer takes more than a few minutes, we’ll leave. I don’t want this paper to become more important than the interview. Sam That sounds sensible. The print menu is open. Which file are you choosing? You can look at the page before you send it. Anna This one. It has my café experience, the dates, and my contact information. I checked everything before we left the copy shop. Sam The page is coming out now. It looks clear, and the text is easy to read. You have your copy. Anna I do. And I’m still early. Thank you for coming with me, Sam. I felt rushed when the first printer stopped working. Sam I’m glad I could help. You made the decision, though. You didn’t let a small problem decide how the whole morning would go. Anna I’ll keep the resume in my folder, and I’ll ask about the schedule like we practiced. I’m ready to meet them now. Sam Then let’s head to the hotel. You have time to get there calmly, and you have your resume if they want to see it.
