Narrator This is Anna’s New Start. Anna has just arrived in a new city and is looking for work. Today, she meets Sam at a neighborhood café to check her email after applying for a breakfast assistant job at the Harbor Lane Hotel. She hopes the hotel has received her application. Anna Sam, can you look at this with me? I got an email from the Harbor Lane Hotel, but the subject line is very short. I’m afraid I might misunderstand it. Sam Sure. It says, “Breakfast assistant application.” That sounds like a reply to your application. Do you want to open it? We can read it slowly together. Anna Yes, please. I’m glad I brought my phone. The screen is small, but I can make the words bigger. All right, I can read it now. I was checking every few minutes, so I’m relieved to see a message. Sam They say they would like to meet you for an interview. That’s good news, Anna. They’re asking if you’re available Thursday at ten in the morning. It looks like they want you to reply and confirm. Anna An interview! I hoped they might answer, but I didn’t expect it so soon. Thursday at ten should work. I need to check one thing before I say yes, though. I don’t want to accept a time and then have to change it. Sam Of course. What do you need to check? Take your time. There’s no need to answer before you’re sure the time works for you. Anna Mei said I can move into her room on Saturday. I need to pay the first month’s rent that day, and I want to make sure I have time to prepare before then. My things are still in a few bags. Sam Thursday is two days before Saturday. Could you go to the interview and still get ready to move? You don’t have to do everything in one day. You could set aside some time after the interview to pack. Anna You’re right. I can pack my clothes after the interview. I was thinking about the rent, too. If they offer me the job, I don’t want to promise I can start right away. I need to know how the schedule works. Sam An interview isn’t a job offer yet. You can ask about the schedule if they offer you the position. For now, you only need to choose a time to meet. One step at a time. Anna That makes sense. The email says, “Please reply to confirm.” Should I just write, “Thursday works for me”? I want to be polite, but I don’t want to make the message too long. Sam That’s clear. You could also thank them and repeat the time, so there’s no confusion. Keep it short and polite. You don’t need to explain your moving plans or anything else. Anna How about: “Thank you for inviting me to interview. Thursday at ten in the morning works for me. I look forward to meeting you.” Does that sound natural? I want it to sound like me, not like I copied a form. Sam It does. It’s warm and clear. You could add your name at the end, too. Then they’ll know exactly who replied, even if they’re reading messages quickly. Anna I’ll add, “Best, Anna.” I’m going to read it once more before I send it. I don’t want to accidentally write the wrong day, especially after we talked about Saturday. Sam Take your time. Thursday, ten in the morning, at the Harbor Lane Hotel. You’ve got the right day and time in your message. Check that the hotel name is right, too. Anna All right. I pressed send. Now I see it in my sent messages. That’s a relief. I used to check work email at my old hotel, but this is my first interview here. It feels different when it’s about my own next step. Sam You already know how a hotel works, and you’ve got six years of experience. You don’t have to pretend you know everything. Just tell them what you’ve done and what you can do. Anna I can talk about breakfast service and food safety. I’ll bring a copy of my resume, too. I saved it on my phone, but I should print one before Thursday. I’d feel better holding a paper copy in the interview. Sam That’s a good plan. There’s a print shop near the bus stop. We can check its hours later, but you don’t need to solve that this minute. You have a couple of days to get the resume ready. Anna I’m glad you came with me. I was nervous about opening the email, and then I wasn’t sure how to answer. Now I have a time and a plan. I can feel myself getting less tense. Sam You did the important part yourself. You applied, checked your email, and replied. That’s a real step forward. Let’s have our coffee while it’s still warm, and then we can think about where to print your resume. Anna Yes. And on Thursday, I’ll meet the hotel manager and ask about the job. For today, I can enjoy this coffee and think about what to bring. I’m still nervous, but now I have something good to prepare for.
