Narrator This is Anna’s New Start. Anna has just arrived in a new English-speaking city and is looking for work. Today, she meets Sam at the job center for a resume workshop. She has brought her papers, but she is not sure how to turn her hotel experience into a resume for local employers. Anna Sam, is this the room for the resume workshop? I see many people, but I do not see a sign. Sam Yes, this is the room. The sign is on the other side of the door. You arrived early. Anna I wanted to be early. My bus was faster than yesterday, but I was afraid I might come to the wrong building. Sam You are in the right place. Did you bring your folder? Anna Yes. I have my certificates, my work dates, and the page about my hotel job. I also have an email from Lidia. She says I may use her name as a reference. She remembers my work and says I can give her email to an employer. Sam Excellent. That was the missing piece from yesterday. Good morning, Ms. Lopez. Ms. Lopez Good morning. Please come in and take a seat. I am Ms. Lopez, and I will lead today’s workshop. Anna Good morning, Ms. Lopez. My name is Anna. This is my friend Sam. He is helping me understand some words. Ms. Lopez That is fine. Sam may help Anna, but Anna should make the choices about her own resume. Today, we will make a simple resume. It tells an employer what you can do, where you worked, and how to contact you. It does not need to tell your whole life story. Anna I have worked in hotels for six years. I cleaned rooms, prepared breakfast, and helped guests. Should I write every task? Ms. Lopez Write the tasks that show useful skills. “Prepared breakfast for hotel guests” is stronger than only saying “worked in a hotel.” You can also say, “answered guest questions” and “worked with a small team.” Employers want to see how you helped the workplace. Anna So I should use action words: prepared breakfast, helped guests, cleaned rooms, and worked with a team. Sam Your old certificate says you completed food safety training. That could be important for breakfast work. Anna Yes, but the certificate is from my country. Will an employer here understand it? Ms. Lopez It is still useful. Put the name of the training and the year. Do not call it a local certificate if it is not. You can explain it honestly during an interview. Anna I understand. Honest and simple. What should I write at the top? Ms. Lopez Write your name, phone number, email address, and city. You do not need to write your full home address if you do not want to. Anna I have a phone number now, but I do not have a permanent address yet. I move into a room on Saturday. I thought an address was necessary, and I was worried an employer would reject me. Ms. Lopez Many employers understand that people are moving. Use your current phone number and email. You can add the neighborhood after you move. Employers mainly need a way to reach you. Sam That means you do not have to wait until Saturday to apply. Anna That is good news. May I write “hotel worker” as my job title, or is there a better title? Ms. Lopez You can write “hotel services worker.” Under that, list your experience. You may also write a short goal: “Experienced hotel worker seeking housekeeping or breakfast work.” Anna I like that. It shows two kinds of work. I can clean, and I can prepare food. Later, I may look for front desk work, but first I need one good beginning. Ms. Lopez That is a practical plan. Now, Anna, please read your draft to me. Anna Anna Petrova. Phone number and email. Goal: experienced hotel services worker seeking housekeeping or breakfast work. Experience: prepared breakfast, cleaned guest rooms, answered guest questions, and worked with a team. Ms. Lopez Very good. Add the dates of your hotel job and the food safety training. Then add Lidia as a reference, with her permission and contact information. Anna I have her permission. I will add her email. This feels more real than a blank page. Sam There is a new job on the board near the computers. A small hotel needs a breakfast assistant. The hours are early, but the work sounds right for you. Anna Can I apply today with this draft? Ms. Lopez Yes. Use the center’s computer after the workshop. I can show you how to send the resume by email. Apply even if you do not meet every requirement. Anna Then I will apply today. I came here to learn about a resume, and I am leaving with a first application.
