Narrator This is Anna’s New Start. Anna has recently arrived in a new city and is looking for work. At the Neighborhood Job Center, she has a new resume and has found a breakfast assistant job at a small hotel. Today, she and Sam sit down at a computer to send her application. Anna Sam, can you read this sentence before I send it? I want to make sure it sounds right. Sam Sure. “I have six years of experience in hotel housekeeping and breakfast service. I enjoy helping guests and working with a team.” That sounds clear to me. Anna Good. I wrote it, but now I keep seeing little mistakes that may not be there. I have read it so many times that the words are starting to look strange. Sam That happens when you look at the same page for a long time. Let’s check the job name and the email address first. Then we can look at the rest with fresh eyes. Anna The job is breakfast assistant at the Harbor Lane Hotel. The email says jobs at harborlane dot com. I copied it from the notice, letter by letter. Sam And the subject line says, “Application for Breakfast Assistant.” That makes it easy for them to see what your email is about. It also matches the name of the job. Anna There’s a box for a message, too. Should I write something there, or just attach the resume? I don’t want the message to be too long. Sam A short message is helpful. You can say you’re applying for the position, and that your resume is attached. Keep it simple. The resume has the details. Anna How about, “Hello, I am applying for the breakfast assistant position. I have attached my resume. Thank you for your time.” Sam That’s polite and easy to understand. Maybe add your name at the end, so they know who sent it. You could also say, “Best,” before your name. Anna Done. I’m going to attach the file now. Oh, there are two resume files. One says Anna Resume, and one says Anna Resume Final. I didn’t notice that before. Sam Which one did Ms. Lopez help you finish today? It’s easy to choose the older copy by mistake when the names are almost the same. Anna Anna Resume Final. The other one is an earlier draft. I’ll choose the final one. I don’t want to send the wrong page. Sam Good catch. Is the attachment showing beside the message now? Check that the file name appears there before you send anything. Anna Yes. I can see the file name. I should check the resume once more. There’s a line about my food safety training. Sam That training is useful for breakfast work. It shows you have experience with safe food handling. It’s worth keeping that line in the resume. Anna And it’s true. I helped prepare breakfast at my last hotel. I set out food, kept the area clean, and helped guests find what they needed. Sam That sounds like a good match for this job. You’ve also got Lidia listed as a reference, right? Anna Yes. She said I can give her name and phone number. I’m glad I asked before putting it on the resume. I wanted her to know someone might call. Ms. Lopez Hi, Anna. I’m glad you’re using the computer. How is the application going? Anna Hello, Ms. Lopez. I’m nearly ready to send it. Sam is helping me check the email and the attachment. Ms. Lopez That’s a good idea. Before you send it, look at the name on the resume file. Does it include your last name? Anna Oh, it only says Anna Resume Final. Is that a problem? I didn’t think much about the file name when I saved it. Ms. Lopez It’s better to use a clear name. A manager may save several resumes, and a file name that says Anna and the job can help them find yours later. Anna I understand. I can save another copy as Anna Resume Breakfast Assistant. I’ll leave the resume itself the same, so I won’t change any of the information. Ms. Lopez Exactly. Choose “Save As,” then give the copy a clear name. You don’t need to change the information inside. The first file can stay as it is. Sam There it is: Anna Resume Breakfast Assistant. Now the email has the clearly named file, and everything else looks ready. Anna Thank you both. I’m checking the address one last time. All right. I’m sending it now. Sam Did you get a message that it was sent? Sometimes the screen takes a moment to change. Anna Yes. It says the email was sent. I feel relieved. I can’t decide what they’ll say, but at least they have my application. Sam You took a careful first step. If they reply, you can read it here or check your email on your phone. Anna I’ll check my phone tonight. And now I know how to send another application without starting from the beginning. That makes the next one feel less difficult.
